Job Overview:

Macy’s Strategic Business Development is an in-house strategy consulting group responsible for creating and pursuing strategies that can have meaningful impact on top- and bottom-line financial results. Applying analytical rigor and structured problem-solving, the Strategic Business Development group is engaging with business leaders across core retail functions in strategic problem solving for critical business problems. As change agents, the Strategic Business Development team is responsible not only for the formulation of these strategies but also for engaging cross-functional teams in their pursuit.

Reporting to the VP, Strategic Business Development will help identify, analyze, evaluate, and champion strategies and initiatives that will deliver significant top and bottom line growth for Macy’s. He / she will independently lead cross-functional teams of senior leaders to address and resolve key strategic challenges and develop multi-year strategic visions and roadmaps.  The Director will be responsible for providing thought leadership and structure for ambiguous business problems and working with junior team members and stakeholders across all levels and functions to translate strategies into specific, results-driving initiatives. This will also include evaluating changes to structure, incentives and processes to successfully bring the vision to life.  The Director will also provide strategic oversight and monitor progress during implementation. The Director will contribute to driving a culture of innovation by exploring trends, innovations, and business opportunities that align with the corporate strategy. He / she will be responsible for creating Executive Committee-level updates to influence decisions about new projects / initiatives and will have significant exposure to business leaders across the organization.

Since Macy’s Strategy team operates like an internal consulting group, specific assignments will vary over time – however, the goal is for this individual to primarily work on strategic initiatives related to assortment strategy and private label product development.

The Director will responsible for leading and partnering with cross-functional teams. Since this Director will serve as a “change agent”, experience (and comfort) with leading and influencing teams without formal authority is important for success in this role. The Director will have significant day-to-day exposure to business leaders across the organization. Therefore, the role requires strong communication and collaboration skills. Perform other duties as assigned.

Essential Functions:

  • Work with Senior-level Executives across functions and channels to develop near- and long-term visions and roadmaps.
  • Provide thought leadership on structuring complex, ambiguous business problems and bring fact-based, leading-edge thinking, frameworks and business tools to 1:1 and group forums.
  • Lead projects with cross-functional stakeholders across levels without direct reporting line for successful design and implementation.
  • Partner with analytics teams to design compelling analyses and build business cases to inform strategic tradeoffs and decisions.
  • Deliver high-impact presentations for Senior-level Executive audiences to influence action on strategic recommendations.
  • Translate strategy into specific business initiatives and develop tools to measure and evaluate them.
  • Regular, dependable attendance & punctuality.



  • BA/BS Degree required, MBA preferred.
  • 5-8 years of relevant work experience in Strategy Consulting and/or Retail Strategy.
  • Knowledge and interest in retail, technology, and innovation.
  • Experience managing a high-performing team and developing less experienced team members (with or without formal reporting relationship).
  • Executes following a “Teams Win” philosophy, fostering a positive, collaborative environment.

Communication Skills:

  • Excellent communication and facilitation skills (oral, written and listening).
  • Ability to understand, organize and communicate complex information in an easily understandable format tailored to a variety of audiences.

Mathematical Skills:

  • Basic math functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and analytical skills.

Reasoning Ability:

  • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision and make sound decisions.

Physical Demands:

  • This position involves regular walking, standing, sitting for extended periods of time, hearing, and talking.
  • May occasionally involve stooping, kneeling, or crouching.
  • May involve close vision, color vision, depth perception, focus adjustment, and viewing computer monitor for extended periods of time. 
  • Involves manual dexterity for using keyboard, mouse, and other office equipment.
  • May involve moving or lifting items under 10 pounds.

Other Skills:

  • High-energy, passionate, and proven track record of developing and implementing strategies.
  • Ability to independently lead team and drive to results with minimal direction.

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule based on department and company needs.
