Job Overview:


An experienced civil litigator needed to join Macy’s in-house litigation team located in St. Louis, Missouri. Macy’s Litigation Team is responsible for most of Macy’s nationwide uninsured litigation docket.  This position requires the active defense of all aspects of lawsuits brought against Macy’s and its divisions from answer to appeal, and the performance of other duties as assigned.  This position actively litigates across the country and involves only minimal monitoring of litigation. 


This position is based out of St. Louis, Missouri.



Essential Functions:


  • Ability to independently handle a range of commercial, class action, consumer credit, and employment litigation matters with supervision from investigation to appeal, including but not limited to: legal research; writing briefs/motions; interviewing witnesses; factual investigations; drafting/responding to discovery; taking/defending depositions; mediating; negotiating; conducting arbitrations and trials as first or second chair; and communicating with clients, opposing parties, courts, and arbitrators in a timely manner.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong ability to analyze legal and factual issues and to write persuasively and concisely for external and internal audiences (writing sample required).
  • Strong negotiation skills and creative-thinker.
  • Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team depending on department needs.  Must be able to work closely with both the litigation team and the wide range of clients it serves.
  • Must possess the ability to build trusting relationships internally (colleagues, clients) and externally (opposing counsel, triers of fact).
  • Strong organizational and time management skills required; must be able to prioritize assignments and multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Required to participate in interdepartmental conferences, committees, and meetings.
  • Significant nationwide travel required.
  • Regular, dependable attendance and punctuality.






  • J.D. required; 3 – 5 years litigation experience, preferably in private practice.
  • Also, must be admitted to Missouri bar or other state bar. 
  • If not licensed in Missouri, must have ability to waive in to Missouri bar.



Communication Skills:


  • Ability to read, write, and interpret instructional documents such as reports and procedure manuals.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills; excellent research, writing, analytical, and written communication skills. 


Mathematical Skills:


  • Must have above average mathematical skills, including the ability to compute rates, ratios, and percentages, and the ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. 


Reasoning Ability:


  • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision; self-motivated; ability to analyze complex legal issues required.


Physical Demands:


  • This position involves regular walking, standing, sitting for extended periods of time, hearing, and talking.
  • May occasionally involve stooping, kneeling, or crouching.
  • May involve close vision, color vision, depth perception, focus adjustment, and viewing computer monitor for extended periods of time. 
  • Involves manual dexterity for using keyboard, mouse, and other office equipment.
  • May involve moving or lifting items under 10 pounds.


Other Skills:


  • Must have a strong client-service orientation, with a focus on collaboration and creative problem-solving. 
  • Must be able to independently handle multiple cases effectively, with attention to detail and strong follow-up.


Work Hours:


  • Ability to work a flexible schedule based on department and store/company needs – may include nights and weekends.
  • Ability to travel on a nationwide basis required – an average of 5-7 days per month.
