Macy's, Inc. operates in some of the most dynamic and exciting cities in the nation, and it is important to us that our operations mirror the diversity of our communities.

Diversity within our workforce, vendor relationships and customer base is important to Macy's, Inc. Our philosophy is intended to ensure that appreciation for the unique characteristics and strengths of every individual is pervasive at every level of the company.

Ours is among the most diverse and inclusive organization in any industry. Across the country, Macy's, Inc.'s management ranks include 68% of executives who are women and 29% who are racial minorities.

In addition to being the right thing to do, having a diverse workforce is a distinct business advantage. Because Macy's, Inc. serves customers in virtually every geographic and demographic segment in the U.S., our stores need to reflect the characteristics of our customers through merchandise styles and assortments, store displays and advertising.

We have adjusted our business strategies accordingly. From the sales floor ... to advertising and marketing ... to our merchandise selection, diversity works for us because it improves the process of serving a diverse American marketplace.

We have adopted diversity as a philosophy in managing our workforce, serving our customers and working with vendors. To bolster and enhance this initiative among a new generation of young Americans, we have turned to local and national advertising, online Internet postings, college recruiting at universities nationwide and active community-outreach programs in local markets.

We are committed to training and developing our workforce so that qualified individuals can be readily promoted within the organization. (For more information, click onto the Learning & Development section.) Our training programs are among the best in retail today. The Executive Development training program at Macy's Corporate Services offers a variety of courses designed to enhance each of our associate's business and leadership skills.

In 2002, a dozen corporate office associates were named to Macy's Corporate Services' new Diversity Council, an advisory group that provides continuous communication, recommendations and strategies specific to diversity-related issues. This special ongoing committee represents a cross-section of the corporate office workforce. Members serve as the eyes and ears of the organization, and help develop and sustain diversity-related activities.

Macy's Corporate Services has extended its commitment to diversity beyond our workforce and into the communities we serve and the vendors we support. Macy's Corporate Services is an active supporter of organizations such as the Inclusion Network, INROADS, the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, and the YMCA Black Achievers.

Additionally, Macy's, Inc.'s Supplier Diversity Program seeks to source goods and services - either for resale or in support of our business operations - from qualified minority- and women-owned enterprises. The number of certified vendors has more than doubled in the past five years. In 2005, these purchases totaled approximately $491.8 million.
