Southern California

If retail's cutting edge is where you want to be, Macy's West, Bloomingdale's, or Macy's Logistics and Operations in Southern California is a great place to start. On the streets of Southern California, fashion takes form. And nestled between its beaches and mountaintops ... orbiting among its hotspots and nightclubs, a style-savvy crowd creates trends that travel the globe. With a delicate mixture of urbane glamour and natural beauty the Southern California coast is home to the likes of star-studded Los Angeles, surf-laden Orange County and sun-drenched San Diego. Where you end up is just a matter of l'attitude.

Los Angeles, of course, is the film capital of the world, and Hollywood itself is in the midst of a major facelift to restore the luster of its heyday as "Tinseltown." Just take a stroll down Hollywood Boulevard, where the proof is quite literally set in stone. In front of Mann's Chinese Theatre, you'll find the hand- and foot-imprinted cement branded permanently by six decades of stars. Cross the street, and you'll witness the Walk of Fame's star-shaped plaques that pay tribute to an additional 2,000 celebrities. But while the city's glamorous residents are a surefire tourist draw, for LA locals ... the city is oh so much more.

With museums, galleries and theaters that number in the thousands, LA's cultural scene is certainly worthy of star status. The impressive Getty Center, a billion-dollar repository perched on a hilltop, combines priceless art collections with striking architecture and stunning landscape. Another prime museum district just east of Beverly Hills (on Wilshire Boulevard for any "Pretty Woman" fans) houses the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The city's Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) features one of the country's best collections of art dated after 1940.

And with a metropolis of this magnitude and prestige, it goes without saying that the dining and nightlife is first-rate. For the best view of the city skyline at night, you'll go to Yamashiro in Beverly Hills. If you delight in avant-garde, select one of the funky restaurants along Main Street in Venice - where you don't need a ticket to watch the theater of humanity. Wolfgang Puck's internationally renowned flagship restaurant Spago is located in Beverly Hills. Try Yi Cuisine for an interesting blend of French and Asian fare. The fresh seafood and oyster bars beckon diners to The Water Grill in Los Angeles and The Lobster in Santa Monica. The Velvet Margarita Cantina is known for its hot food and cold drinks. And if a good steak is your passion, you'll have read about Mastro's Steakhouse, Nick & Stef's and Pacific Dining Car in Gourmet magazine.
