San Francisco

*Page 1Page 2
The sweet smell of fortune originally brought people to San Francisco. Her ethereal riches convinced them to stay. And the allure of the Bay Area today is a major advantage in attracting promising young professionals to companies such as Bloomingdale's, Macy's West, macys.com, Macy's Logistics and Operations or Macy's Corporate Services.

Just the mere whisper of this city's name brings to mind a flood of distinctive images: cable cars, the Golden Gate Bridge, lanky Victorian homes (affectionately called "painted ladies"), steep and winding streets, the Mission District, the vibrancy of Union Square (anchored by Macy's West flagship store, where you'd better have a reservation to dine at the Cheesecake Factory).

Perched on the tip of the continent, the city itself occupies a seven-by-seven-mile stretch of land, hugging the San Francisco Bay on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other. What started in the 1800s as an anonymous sleepy village was transformed in 1849 when the population exploded to over 100,000 citizens in a year thanks to the Gold Rush. And between those two walls of water, a city of fairytale record and mesmerizing character was born.

Boasting such unlikely landmarks as the inescapable federal penitentiary on Alcatraz and the infamous curves of Lombard Street - the "crookedest street in the world", San Francisco is extraordinarily interesting. And like many great things, its charm is in its quirky disposition. Typical is City Lights, founded in 1953 and one of the few truly great independent bookstores in the United States. It's a place where people from around the world come to find great reading while browsing in alternative culture's unique literary landmark.

The list of attractions in San Francisco is long and exalted, but here are just a few: the Presidio, Telegraph Hill, the Palace of Fine Arts and Exploratorium, the Cable Car Museum, Mission Dolores (the city's oldest building), Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39, Hyde Street Pier and Ghirardelli Square (stop in for great chocolate). You can jog Golden Gate Park, catch the waves at Point Lobos, explore your artistic side in Sausalito, and lose yourself in the redwoods and sequoias at Muir Woods National Monument.

Also topping the list of selling points are San Francisco's internationally renowned symphony, ballet, art museums, theaters and operas. And the shopping scene - from mega-malls, to Macy's West Union Square flagship, to one-of-a-kind specialty boutiques - is unsurpassed.
