Sacramento

*Page 1Page 2Page 3
Growing in population and sophistication while maintaining a fierce dedication to its colorful Wild West past, Sacramento, California's capital, is a sprawling metropolis that offers many opportunities for a professional working at Macy's West or Macy's Logistics and Operations. In the same year that gold was discovered near the South Fork of the American River, the town of Sacramento was laid out on Captain John Sutter's property. Its central location in the very fertile San Joaquin Valley allows agriculture to be the backbone of the economy and has assured prosperity for the region.

Sacramento evolved from a tent city and prospered because of its prime location between the Sacramento and American Rivers. With more trees per capita than any other city in the country, you'll notice the town's leafy appearance as you stroll along the wide, tree-shaded streets lined by elegant Victorian homes.

Travel back in time when you visit Old Sacramento. Adjacent to downtown, Old Sacramento is a 12-block neighborhood that has been redeveloped with museums, restaurants, and shops to preserve its historical character. Along its cobblestone streets and wooden sidewalks, inside its horse-drawn carriages and old-fashioned saloons, you'll rediscover the gold rush days. Although it is a state historic district, the town is for more than just tourists. The old stone and brick buildings house entertainment and dining for locals, as well.

Its unique and charming downtown comes to life with candy stores, costume shops, a world-class comedy club, a live theater, pubs, bookstores, and elegant restaurants with extraordinary views of the river. And lining the canopied sidewalks, serenading musicians, jugglers, acrobats, and mimes engulf busy shopping crowds.

Marvel at the plethora of museums in the Sacramento area. The Crocker Art Museum is the oldest public art museum west of the Mississippi River and features early and contemporary California art. Explore artifacts and interactive exhibits at the Discovery Museum, including a million-dollar Mother Lode gold collection. Discover Sutter's Fort, the restored 1839 adobe fort that depicts life in the pioneer and gold rush days. A must for auto buffs is the Towe Auto Museum's vast warehouse of cars, motorcycles, and auto memorabilia. The Governor's Mansion State Historic Park is a Victorian-style mansion that has housed 13 of California's prominent families, including the Reagans.
