Pittsburgh

*Page 1Page 2
Macy's Midwest has emerged as an important retailer and fashion leader in Pittsburgh, a highly livable city where the charm of the small-town Midwest meets the sophistication of the East Coast. Once regarded as a gritty industrial center, Pittsburgh has made huge gains in urban renewal efforts, cleaning up old factories and warehouses and replacing them with museums, clubs and restaurants. Today's Pittsburgh is not what you'd expect from the "Steel City."

The city itself is a collection of diverse ethnic neighborhoods scattered through a hilly terrain that offers numerous vistas, parks and open spaces. The population is friendly to the point that out-of-towners often get "adopted" as part of extended families. Preserved historic structures, interspersed with sleek new developments, make the city visually interesting.

Into pop culture? The Andy Warhol Museum is one of only two in the U.S. dedicated to a single artist, and the Mattress Factory devotes its entire collection to contemporary art. For a more traditional view of the arts, head over to The Carnegie, Pittsburgh's mecca for culture. The Carnegie has everything from art and architecture museums to a music hall. The world-renowned Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra plays at Heinz Hall and natives enjoy Broadway productions in the Benedum Center.

Pittsburgh loves its sports teams. Heinz Field and PNC Park are rocking with every Steelers and Pirates home game. For hockey fans, NHL phenomenon Sidney Crosby leads the Penguins into action at Mellon Arena. And college sports enthusiasts will love the Peterson Events Center, the rowdy home of the University of Pittsburgh Panthers basketball teams.

Since the city's revival, downtown Pittsburgh has become the lifeblood of the region. Locals come into the city to shop at the Golden Triangle or to eat and drink the night away at Station Square, part of the old warehouse district for Pittsburgh's steel and shipping industries of yesteryear. For night life, most will head over to Oakland near the campuses of Carnegie-Mellon and the University of Pittsburgh. For a better view of the city, take a cable lift to the top of Mt. Washington or enjoy the river scenery on one of Pittsburgh's many boat tour fleets.
