If a position at Macy's South is music to your ears, you'll thrive on the rhythm of Memphis. While Tennessee's capital may call itself "Music City," no other place in America can claim the diverse musical legacy of Memphis. From Beale Street to Graceland, Memphis gave this country both blues and rock and roll. Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins are just a few of music's pioneers who got their start at Memphis' famous Sun Studios - and their chords resound through the city today. Songwriters David Porter and Isaac Hayes also made their mark on music in Memphis when writing hits such as "Soul Man" and "Hold On, I'm Comin." A fan of any beat will appreciate historic Beale Street, the heart and soul of Memphis. Grab a drink and lend an ear to some of Memphis' most talented rock and blues artists. Keep your eyes open for B.B. King; the legend is known to stop by Beale and play a few tunes at his blues club. Grab a drink at the Rum Boogie Café and browse through the antiques, trinkets, and novelties at Strange Cargo. Memphis is a city where the spirit of Elvis - if not The King himself - lives on. Graceland is likely to be the first place you'll take friends or family visiting from out-of-town, followed by the Memphis Music Hall of Fame and the Rock 'n' Soul Museum at the famous Gibson Guitar Plant. While live local music acts can be heard year-round at the clubs and bars, the best of the best converge on Memphis to play at the city's numerous music festivals. Memphis in May and Blues Memphis Week in October are two of the best. Memphis in May includes a performance by the local SunTrust Sunset Symphony, where you can enjoy classical sounds while having a picnic on the lawn. Memphis also is known for its good taste in Southern cuisine (after all, Memphis is THE barbecue capital of the country). Check out Central BBQ downtown, rumored to be the best barbecue spot in the city. The World Champion Barbecue Cooking Contest at Tom Lee Park pits the best grillers in the country against each other, while the patrons reap the tasty home-cooked benefits.
