Everyone knows Kentucky and its Bluegrass Country for Thoroughbred horses, but this state offers its residents more than just horse farms and a Triple Crown event. Kentucky is one of the most scenic states in the country, with bicycling and hiking trails criss-crossing the state's lush, green forests. Sound inviting? Join the Macy's team and find out for yourself. Louisville and Lexington, the state's two largest metropolitans, bring a "big-city" presence to the Bluegrass State. Mixing culture and nightlife with Kentucky's country charm provides a perfect balance for residents. Although most define Louisville by its famous Kentucky Derby, the city has quickly established itself as a cultural and commercial center of the Midwest. The city's entrepreneurial reputation stems from its growing young professional population. And who could mention Kentucky without taking a minute to recognize the founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken, Colonel Harland Sanders. Sanders opened his first KFC restaurant not far from Louisville. Locals can visit the fully restored restaurant and sample the Colonel's wares. (Just don't expect to find the secret recipe in the gift shop). The sports mecca in Louisville is Churchill Downs where every year more than 100,000 spectators flock to the biggest single horse race in the country - the Kentucky Derby. But before the starting trumpet sounds, the city prepares with the Derby Festival, two weeks of parties, parades and festivities celebrating the event. If horse racing doesn't quench your thirst for sports, head over to Louisville Slugger Field home to the Louisville Bats, a minor league affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds. If the boys of summer are off in a warmer climate, check out the University of Louisville basketball and football teams. The Cardinals are led into action at Freedom Hall by Head Coach Rick Pitino. Motor sports fans will want to get a ticket to a Kentucky Motor Speedway event. NASCAR drivers Darrell and Michael Waltrip got their start here.
