Indianapolis

*Page 1Page 2
Indianapolis has all the amenities people have come to expect from a Midwestern city - low cost of living, less congestion, friendly people. But this city in the heart of the Hoosier State has a lot more to offer its residents. World-class cultural and sporting events mix with Indy's happening nightlife to provide an environment not unlike what one would expect from Chicago, New York or Los Angeles. Joining the Macy's Midwest team in Indianapolis will surely wave the green flag in front of your career.

To say that Indianapolis is a sports town would be a vast understatement. Already host to the two biggest single-day sporting events in the world, the Indianapolis 500 and the Brickyard 400, basketball great Oscar Robertson's hometown hosts Olympic trials, collegiate athletics and minor league baseball, not to mention its professional teams, the Colts and Pacers.

But athletics certainly isn't all Indy has to offer. There are over 150 arts organizations in Indianapolis including the acclaimed Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra performs more than 200 concerts a year, including various concert series at Hilbert Circle Theatre, and free summertime concerts in the nearby city parks. The Artsgarden is one of the most unique arts and cultural centers in the world. Suspended 17 feet above the intersection of Washington and Illinois streets, the Artsgarden offers a terrific view of the city as well as numerous free exhibitions and performances throughout the year. Another outstanding venue, Clowes Hall on the Butler University Campus, is the home of the Indianapolis Opera.

For a breath of fresh air, Indy residents take in the sights of the downtown Canal Walk and the White River State Park, (one of 113 parks in the Indy area). A highlight is White River Gardens featuring both indoor and outdoor botanical displays. When in season, visitors can walk more than a mile of pathways through the outdoor gardens. Another popular walking/jogging destination is the Monon Trail on the city's north side.

Boating is big on the canal and so are the festivals. One of the best is the Indy Jazz Fest, which brings local and national jazz musicians to various locations throughout Indianapolis. Two days of jazz and blues concerts bring in more than 50,000 people every year. The concerts are scattered throughout the downtown area, and with mostly free admission, you can sit back and relax to the soothing jazz sounds without breaking the bank.

Another not-to-miss event is Taste of Indianapolis, where every Spring the area's top restaurants congregate in Glendale Mall to serve out free samples of some of their signature dishes. The artistic types will want to visit the Penrod Arts Fair held every August. Everything from opera to ballet is performed live during the festival.
