Great Plains States

Strike it rich in the "Gem" and "Treasure" states or explore the vast natural wealth of "Big Wyoming" with a promising and challenging career at Macy's Northwest. With more historical, geological, and recreational diversity than one could imagine, the Great Plains States of Idaho, Montana and Wyoming are both diamond and rough.

While Idaho ranks number one in the nation as the producer of 72 types of precious and semi-precious stones, (some of which can be found nowhere else in the world), Montana's rugged mountains yield a wealth of gold and silver. Wyoming is noted for its jade, where both green and black varieties of the stone can be found. Idaho's stunning high-altitude panoramas, great quality of life and low cost of living have drawn famous residents like Ernest Hemingway and World Champion Downhill Racer Picabo Street. Montana, with its vast plains of prairie grass and endless blue skies, has had its own dance with fame as the spectacular backdrop for movie favorites such as "The Horse Whisperer," "A River Runs Through It," and "Far and Away." Wyoming's rugged terrain - mixed with plains and mountains - set the stage for Steven Spielberg's "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" (when the spaceship landed on the massive rocky peak of Devils Tower). And Harrison Ford, who starred in some of the greatest adventure movies of all time, found his own entertainment on a Wyoming ranch.

And while all three states are similar in their rich natural beauty, each are blessed with certain unique and intriguing features. Get ready for an enthralling journey through some of the most scenic regions in the West - with big, open spaces, drop-dead scenery, and an environment that fosters free thinking.

IdahoIdaho will grant your wish for a taste of one of the country's most isolated and rugged regions. Embrace the scenic splendor of mountains, trees, and a picturesque reservoir in Boise, Idaho's capital and largest metropolitan area. Relish in the 12 gardens of unique western flora at Idaho's Botanical Garden. Escape to Boise National Forest for scenic inspiration and rugged adventure with over 2.6 million acres of mountainous terrain, lakes, wildlife, and abandoned mines and ghost towns. Investigate a self-guided pioneer footpath at the Three Island Crossing and Hageman Valley, where wagon wheel ruts are still visible after more than 100 years of journeys over the Oregon Trail.

Idaho offers other scenic escapes across the state. The inland seaport of Lewiston features spectacular journeys into the main part of Hells Canyon, the deepest river gorge in North America. Admire the white waters of the Snake River plunging more than 212 feet in Twin Falls. Also nearby is Idaho Falls, where you can stroll around the Greenbelt of the Snake River for a venture to John's Bridge in Freeman Park, or golf and swim at Grand Teton Park. And in close proximity to the likes of Yellowstone National Park, Salt Lake City, Jackson Hole and Denver, area residents in Pocatello can enjoy a range of fabulous weekend getaways. Skiing, hiking, camping and water sports are available year-round in Sun Valley and McCall.

If your idea of fun doesn't consist of the outdoors, Boise's arts and cultural scenes are as vast as its prairies - a reflection of a diverse economy that embraces computer chips as well as potato chips. Voted as one of the best small high tech cities and one of the top 50 places to live, Boise offers something for everyone. See a live performance at the outdoor amphitheater during the Idaho Shakespeare Festival or enjoy some interactive activities at the Discovery Center of Idaho. Learn more about the area's history by taking a trip to the Idaho State Capitol building, a smaller version of the nation's capitol (and only statehouse in the country to be heated by geothermal hot water).
