Connecticut

For some time away from the city, Trumbull natives head to Greenfield Hill in Fairfield, Unity Park and Indian Ledge Park in Trumbull and the Thimble Islands off the coast of Branford. Local legend has it that Captain Kidd buried a treasure among the island coves and inlets here. Mountain biking is big in this part of the state, so grab your bike and hit the trails of Supply Ponds near Branford, a local favorite.

Sports fans praise Bridgeport as a bastion of professional and semi-professional sports teams. From the Bridgeport Barrage Major League Lacrosse team to Atlantic League baseball and minor league hockey, Bridgeport has it all. While you're in Bridgeport, stop by The Field for a post-game dinner. Its award-winning cuisine caters to a wide range of hungry customers, and prides itself on making everything fresh daily.

The salty, ocean air hangs heavy in the Waterford/New London area of Connecticut. The sea is a big part of the culture and history of the region as evidenced in the area's attractions and restaurants. Locals will tell you to hit Unk's on the Bay for its good food and even better view of the Niantic River. Burke's Tavern is another local eatery to visit.

Mystic Sea Port and Aquarium is the historical and cultural mecca of the region. Cruise on a replica schooner, hike nature trails or feast on the region's rich history at Mystic's various museums. For a good dose of the performing arts, head to the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center for a production or lecture by a visiting playwright or artist.

If camping and the outdoors are more to your liking, take a trip to Hammonasset Beach State Park. The sprawling acreage of beaches and forest make for a perfect backdrop to a summer weekend away or an afternoon picnic. Rocky Neck State Park, with its winding bike and foot trails, is a great camping destination near the coast. Check out the park's numerous ledges and caves.

Looking for the engine-revving, heart-thumping excitement of NASCAR? Head to the Waterford Speedbowl. Hoops lovers will want to hop on the bandwagons of the University of Connecticut men's and women's basketball teams. Both are perennial national contenders and play their home games in Storrs, CT.

For those craving major league football, baseball and basketball, the sports hotbeds of Boston and New York are both within driving distance.
