Columbus

A career at Macy's in Columbus will take you deep on a journey into the heartland of America's Midwest to the sleepy capital of Ohio - or so it used to be known. Nowadays, Columbus is a rapidly growing center of business, culture and government. Simon Lazarus must have caught a glimpse of this city's bright future when he opened his dry goods store here in 1851.

Culture seekers in Columbus need to look no further than the Columbus Museum of Art to admire works by Monet, Picasso and O'Keeffe among others. The Russell Page Sculpture Garden and the Ross Photography Center are two areas not to miss. The performing arts in Columbus are truly one of a kind as evidenced by the remarkable theatres located in town. The Ohio, Southern and Palace Theatres hold performances by the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, BalletMet, the Broadway Series and Opera Columbus. Ohio State University's Wexner Center for the Arts and the Martin Luther King Jr. Performing and Cultural Arts Complex (the only such facility dedicated to African-American culture in the state) are other great venues to check out.

In autumn when most places turn yellow, orange and brown; Columbus turns scarlet and gray. Home of The Ohio State University, Columbus sports fans live and die with their Buckeyes. The hottest ticket in town on any fall weekend is a ticket to an Ohio State football game. If you are lucky enough to find a ticket, be sure to come early for the tailgate festivities before every game.

If NCAA athletics aren't your style, there are plenty of other sports draws in Columbus. The Columbus Blue Jackets NHL team played their inaugural season in 2000 and calls the Nationwide Arena home. Major League Soccer fans head over to Columbus Crew Stadium for some of the best soccer this side of the Atlantic. In addition to Crew games, the stadium hosts World Cup qualifying and NCAA soccer matches.

Don't forget to bring your golf clubs when traveling to Columbus. With more than 100 public and private courses, Columbus is sure to bring out the Tiger Woods in every amateur golfer. Local hero Jack Nicklaus refined his game on some of this area's courses and built Muirfield Golf Course and Country Club, home to the annual Memorial Day tournament.

Nature lovers and fitness buffs will love Columbus' many bike and jogging trails in and around the city. A local favorite is Sharon Woods, a 4-mile paved trail winding through a gorgeous city park. Just north of the city lies Alum Creek State Park complete with trails, fishing coves and picnic areas. Battelle Riverfront Park and Bicentennial Park are both conveniently located downtown for a lunchtime stroll. Don't be alarmed by the 15th century sailing ship you see on the riverfront, it's just a replica of city namesake Christopher Columbus' Santa Maria. For one of the best tastes of the outdoors in the state, take a short trip to the Hocking Hills region of Ohio. Just a short drive southeast of Columbus, this area's numerous state parks and lakes will satisfy anyone's need for nature. Activities here include canoeing, hiking, horseback riding, rock climbing (Hocking Hills has the only state-approved rappelling and climbing in Ohio), as well as a slew of other attractions.
