Birmingham

Page 1*Page 2
For the arts and culture lovers, Birmingham offers some unique propositions. The Alabama Theatre, for example, is one of the last-working movie palaces, showing daily features that range from first-run and revival films to music concerts and special events. Another Alabama original, the Arlington Antebellum Home and Gardens offers a decorative art museum in the city's only antebellum mansion. Or for something a little less formal, the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum holds reign as the largest motorcycle museum on the continent with almost 900 bikes from every corner of the world and every decade of the 20th Century.

But when push comes to shove, Birmingham is a college town through and through. Home to the University of Alabama at Birmingham, the city is speckled more than 70 blocks with campus buildings, university hangouts, and of course, college students. And UAB's sports organizations, most notably its football and basketball teams, are often a source of spirited hometown pride.

Like any good host, Birmingham isn't one to leave her guests wanting. With more than 300 restaurants dishing up a diverse assortment of cuisine and character, locals can enjoy the latest international fare or the oldest homegrown recipes (Irondale Whistle Stop Café served the first batch of fried green tomatoes). Locals often just head down to Five Points South where they can enjoy fabulous food chased with live music, great scenery and tireless dancing. It is certainly one of the city's top entertainment centers. On Highland Avenue near Five Points South, you'll find the popular lunchtime destination Bottega, which offers Italian and Mediterranean cuisine in an outdoor or indoor setting.

Birmingham residents looking for a weekend retreat, or even a one-day getaway, will also find that they aren't far off from exciting cities like Atlanta and Nashville. Likewise, beach lovers will be smitten with the city's proximity to relaxing vacation destinations including the Gulf Coast and the Florida Panhandle (about a five hour drive).

With a deep-seated dedication to Southern hospitality and a generous dose of urbane sophistication, Birmingham has survived as one of few southern cities to embrace the new world without compromising the old. Here's your chance to become part of its living legacy.
