Sales Manager"Happy associates make Macy's Northwest a happy place to shop. It starts with management and moves down to associates who, in turn, provide personal customer service. It's pride!"
Describe the contribution you make to your store and to Macy's Northwest.
I have contributed to my store as well as to Macy's Northwest by empowering and inspiring my team members and fellow employees to strive each day to make a positive impact in our store. I contribute by helping individuals understand that one person's performance - whether it is in credit, sales, customer service, signing, merchandising or any of the other individual tasks we do every day - does make a difference to the total success of the store and company.
You've been recognized for your leadership as a sales manager. What abilities and skills make you a good leader? How have you made a difference?
Communication is the key! Each day my goal is to lead my team by example. I make every effort to instill a high-quality work ethic in those around me, coaching each team member to strive to become more successful in their jobs. Today, my team consistently leads the store in credit production, sales and serves as an example to other teams in the store.
How do you build your team to provide the best working environment?
I try to reinforce the idea that my associates are a team and not just a group of people who work in the same place. It makes them feel important and involved. There is a sense of camaraderie among us that makes for a good working environment.
How does having a strong team foster the best shopping environment?
Happy associates make Macy's a happy place to shop. It starts with management and moves down to associates who, in turn, provide personal customer service. It's pride!
How do you set the example for your team?
I set the example by instilling in them a positive attitude with a "Yes, I Can" approach. Whatever the task, I encourage them to have a positive attitude.
In the time you've spent with Macy's Northwest what has been your greatest accomplishment?
Realizing that my staff has embraced the concept of being team players and high achievers every day. It is very satisfying personally and professionally.
What would you recommend to a new sales manager joining the company?
They need to know how to be positive, a good listener and quick to give praise. Handle difficult or uncomfortable situations head on with respect and honesty. Doing these things builds a team because a manager is only as good as his or her team.
