LeslieSales Manager

"I don't micromanage my staff. I let them figure things out for themselves. They also know that I am here if they need me. I'm always available to give them input and feedback."

bulletDescribe the contribution you make to your store and to Macy's East.

I'm a team player and do whatever it takes to get my job done. I'm always available and very accessible to my associates. I work with everybody else to make sure that we are a successful store.

bulletYou've been recognized for your leadership as a sales manager. What abilities and skills make you a good leader? How have you made a difference?

I don't micromanage my staff. I let them figure things out for themselves. They also know that I am here if they need me. I'm always available to give them input and feedback. I enjoy working with my associates and encouraging them to do whatever they want to accomplish to further their careers. If they are interested in taking another step forward in retail, I let them know what they need to move up.

bulletHow do you build your team to provide the best working environment?

I treat everyone equally and fairly. I'm constantly on the floor, working along side my team. I don't expect them to do anything that I wouldn't do myself. I'm there to guide and coach them. It's wonderful to be able to come to work to know that you are not only part of a team, but also a part of a family.

bulletHow does having a strong team foster the best shopping environment?

By having a strong team, we can definitely provide outstanding customer service and give the customer the level of service that she expects. We make sure that we give the customer exactly what she needs and are able to help her in a friendly and efficient manner, so that not only does she get what she wants, but she also gets it quickly.

bulletHow do you set the example for your team?

I'm always on the floor and I'm always available for my associates. They trust me and know that they can come to me if they need me. I listen to them while they are on the floor and provide feedback, and, if necessary, counsel them to improve their service. If I see something great going on, I will go to the associate and let them know that they have done a good job.

bulletIn the time you've spent with Macy's East, what has been your greatest accomplishment?

I went from part-time sales when my kids were growing up to full-time sales. It was a big accomplishment when I became a group sales manager. I was also excited to be selected to my store's Star Academy and then to Macy's East's Star Academy the next year.

bulletWhat would you recommend to a new sales manager joining the company?

Have a positive attitude and be open minded. Treat people as they want to be treated. The thing that has helped me the most is to have a sense of humor. I find that goes a long way to make everybody feel more comfortable.
