Hoon

Assistant Department Manager

"The aspect that I appreciate most is that the company believes in me. It is great to know that Macy's, Inc. has that kind of trust in someone fresh out of school."

bulletWhat do you like best about your work environment?

The people are my favorite part of my work environment. I especially enjoy interacting with the associates, training and developing them, helping them reach their potential, and watching them attain their goals.

bulletWhy did you join Macy's, Inc. and why have you stayed?

I joined Macy's, Inc. because of the career opportunities that are available. Macy's, Inc. is not structured for just one career ladder, you can go in any direction. For me, just coming out of college and not specifically knowing which direction I wanted to head in within the retail or fashion industry, Macy's, Inc. gave me a good starting point. Starting on the sales floor gives me the opportunity to go in any direction I want, whether it is training, development, merchandising, or purchasing.

bulletWhat has been your most memorable moment since joining the company?

Taking responsibility of a $3 million area two months into the company, which was juniors and status and women's ready-to-wear, was memorable for me. And through that, it was seeing the associates I trained get promoted into another department, reaching their goals.

bulletWhat do you enjoy most about what you do and what are your overall job responsibilities?

Some of my overall job responsibilities include making my sales plan, being able to manage the whole store, being a manager on duty, and being a manager in charge of credit applications. The aspect that I enjoy the most is that the company believes in me. Although I am just coming out of college, Macy's, Inc. sees that I can accomplish tasks. It is great to know that they have that kind of trust in someone fresh out of school.

bulletWhat contribution do you make to your division and how do you feel you make a difference?

Just being excited about the product, wanting to learn what's new, trendy, and fashionable, and training the associates to better understand the merchandise are ways I contribute to my department and make a difference.

bulletWhat personal interests/hobbies do you have and how do you balance them with your work?

I love to travel, even if it is just a short weekend getaway. I also enjoy playing golf and spending time with friends. It's really just carefully managing my time. I wasn't really good at this in college, but after becoming a manager, I have to plan my days. I've figured out how to balance my life, otherwise it would be really challenging just focusing on work.
