Cosmetics Counter Manager

"I like helping people and giving great customer service. I enjoy seeing the smile on my client's face when they are happy. I have a lot of customers who come in when they are feeling down and by just giving them a makeover, I know I'm making a difference in their day."

bulletWhy did you join Macy's Florida and why have you stayed?
I joined Macy's Florida when I was younger because it is such a good, solid company. I started in the clothing department because I had shopped in the store and was familiar with that area of the business. During my breaks, I would visit the cosmetics department. I really liked working with make-up, so I decided to try working in that part of the store. I've stayed here because the benefits are great and management is wonderful. I'm also very comfortable in the store.

bulletWhat do you enjoy most about what you do and what are your overall job responsibilities?
I like helping people and giving great customer service. I enjoy seeing the smile on my client's face when they are happy. I have a lot of customers who come in when they are feeling down and by just giving them a makeover, I know I'm making a difference in their day. Working in cosmetics is a bit like being a therapist - I'm able to make a difference in someone's day and boost her ego. My overall responsibilities are schedules, maintaining our counters, tracking our sales and client management.

bulletWhat contribution do you make to your division and how does this contribute to the company's overall success?
Great customer service is my contribution to this store. My customers are unique and I relate to them, so we form a strong bond that keeps them coming back to my counter and me. In turn, my contribution to the company is the return of customers from my client base and sales they generate.

bulletWhat has been your most memorable moment since joining the company?
When I first started in cosmetics, we were the number-six counter in the company. There was a lot of opportunity for growth at that counter. We continued to grow and eventually became number one. I've since moved to another store, which was the number-two counter. Once we combined, my counter was back at number one. It's just so exciting and we have so much energy behind staying number one.

bulletHow has the training you've received since joining the company benefited you?
It's refined my skills a lot. I've learned a lot more about the benefits of opening credit cards, both for my clients and me. The training I've receive from my vendor has helped me both personally and professionally, improving my makeover skills and teaching me more about skin care. I'm better able to care for my skin, which allows me to better understand what I am doing when teaching my clients how to care for their skin. I have a better knowledge of our products, because I've learned to use them myself.

bulletIs community involvement important to you, have you been involved in any projects in your division and was this something you considered when joining the company?
I haven't really been involved with any community involvement sponsored by the company, but I'm very active with my church and children's schools outside of work. Education is very important to me, so I take the time to go into my kids' classes to help their teachers. When I do that, I'm not only benefiting my own children, but also the other students in the class.

bulletWhat do you like best about your work environment?
It's a comfortable place to work. My management and co-workers make it really feel like a home. It's very relaxing and there is no stress. I have good relationships with co-workers - sometimes we get together outside of work and we have gatherings at work for birthdays and other special occasions. We do things for each other. We've created more of a family unit than just a co-worker unit.

bulletWhat personal interests/hobbies do you have and how do you balance them with your work?
My biggest personal interest is my kids. I mostly do events with them, such as attending track and field events or watching them play on the football team. That's where my outside interests lie. I've never had an issue balancing those activities with work. I coordinate with my partners to work out schedules that work for all of us.

bulletWhat advice would you give to a new employee joining the company in a position similar to yours? What helped you establish yourself and move ahead with your career goals?
A new associate coming into this position needs to have an open and fair mind. They should also be able to work with others. I've been able to establish my goals by working hard and being dedicated to my job. My upper management has always been very encouraging and has always given me honest advice on any new ideas I may have.

bulletWhat do you see in the future for Macy's, Inc. and specifically for Macy's?
We will continue to make our goals. By serving our customers, they will keep coming back to our stores. In the future, Macy's and Macy's, Inc. will continue to become better places for our customers to shop.
