 | Why did you join Macy's West and why have you stayed? |  |
First off I love retail. I like fashion and because Macy's is fashion forward, I was very interested in coming here. I actually came here when Macy's, Inc. bought the company I was working for and they allowed us to interview with Macy's. I had been a sales associate, supervisor and had just gotten into loss prevention. I was really excited when I interviewed because technology was just coming about and really exploding. Macy's loss prevention department is definitely in the forefront of technology. The tools that we have to do our jobs are always changing for the better. That is a big reason why I have stayed. I like fashion, I like retail, but this is a different side of it. I still have my hands in a little bit of everything. I like to keep the associates knowledgeable about how customer service can reduce shortage. I have stayed because I like change and I like growing; you're never stagnant in loss prevention.
| What do you enjoy most about what you do and what are your overall job responsibilities? | |
I enjoy making a difference in the company by making a positive impact on shortage. I also enjoy being able to help people out whether it be through training or helping someone that has been a victim of a theft. I also enjoy the fact that I get to learn something new almost daily. My overall job responsibilities are to protect the assets of the company and to train, encourage and develop the staff that reports directly to me. I also get to train a lot of people in the store and work with other managers.
| What contribution do you make to your division and how does this contribute to the company's overall success? | |
In the big picture, I contribute in reducing shortage through the prevention process as well as making apprehensions of internal and external theft. The success of this for the company is we end up with qualified associates to sell the merchandise and keep moral up, while keeping shortage down.
| What has been your most memorable moment since joining the company? | |
I have been with Macy's for several years and throughout my experience I have had so many memorable moments which involve the store and my specific department. Overall, the best moments are the feelings of accomplishment and getting an award for it!
| How has the training you've received since joining the company benefited you? | |
The training has benefited me in so many ways. This company does a great job at providing both classroom training as well as mentorship through your managers and supervisors. Basically, the training has allowed me to feel more confident in my abilities to get the job done.
| Is community involvement important to you, have you been involved in any projects in your division and was this something you considered when joining the company? | |
Community involvement really wasn't something that I considered before joining the company. However, since Macy's is so active in supporting the community, I have become more active in the community. I have participated in the Bag Hunger project. It was great to work with other people to make something come together in a positive manner.
| What do you like best about your work environment? | |
I enjoy the flexible work hours because it allows me to do my job better. I also enjoy getting new equipment in our department, such as when we get a new camera or a covert camera, that allows my team to do their jobs better.
| What personal interests/hobbies do you have and how do you balance them with your work? | |
I am interested in physical fitness and getting outdoors. I enjoy hiking and jogging. It is very hard to juggle work, my two kids and my husband. I try to balance it by having a "family" day or I wake up super early to get it all in. As I said before, the company really helps by allowing us to have flexible work days.
| What advice would you give to a new employee joining the company in a position similar to yours? What helped you establish yourself and move ahead with your career goals? | |
Do not be afraid to ask or try. It really is okay if you make a mistake. Macy's offers so many classes and training and everyone is really supportive. Also, make sure you go on to the company's intranet; you really learn a lot and see what is going on in the rest of the company. Through training and asking questions, I have become more confident both at my job and in attaining my career goals.
| What do you see in the future for Macy's, Inc. and specifically for Macy's West? | |
I think Macy's, Inc. is going to grow and do very well. Our store just came out of an inventory and it is having a positive impact on our employees. Everyone is so excited. I think a lot of the changes that we have made are for the better and I am hoping that along with the economy, Macy's, Inc. will grow. That means that the individual stores will grow and the people who work for Macy's, Inc. will grow along with the company. As far as loss prevention goes, I think we have definitely made some great headway this past year in identifying and solving our biggest theft problems. With the increases in technology and partnering with the police department, I think we will make great strides in reducing shortage in the future.
