Buyer"By taking my vision for the future of macys.com and applying it to what I've learned in past experiences, I'm able to advance a nationally recognized brand."
Why did you join macys.com and why have you stayed?
Joining macys.com following the May Company merger was a great opportunity for me. I knew the move would take me down the career path I wanted. I've stayed because I've learned so much and met so many new people, all while having fabulous experiences every day.
What do you enjoy most about what you do and what are your overall job responsibilities?
As an associate buyer for macys.com, I work with size and vendor metrics, set business plans and select merchandise. Buying for macys.com versus a retail store gives me a lot more opportunity. Management is open to my ideas and I'm able to play a hands-on role in my business. I like that I'm not limited to one specific area. I work with every clothing line we have and touch every aspect of buying along the way.
What contribution do you make to your division and how does this contribute to the company's overall success?
The greatest contribution I make to my division is my combination of store division and sales floor background with my dot-com experience. By combining these skills I provide a unique outlook. This combination of knowledge allows me to help make Macy's "America's Department Store." By taking my vision for the future of macys.com and applying it to what I've learned in the past, I'm able to advance a nationally recognized brand.
What has been your most memorable moment since joining the company?
The first time I ran into our CEO, Peter Sachse, at the copy machine. Peter greeted me by name and complimented me on my sales. The fact that he knew my name and my business meant a lot to me.
How has the training you've received since joining the company benefited you?
My web training has definitely been beneficial. Receiving training in the dot-com arena is essential. I'm now comfortable with the Web - not only as a buyer, but also as a consumer.
Is community involvement important to you, have you been involved in any projects in your division and was this something you considered when joining the company?
I've enjoyed community involvement throughout my career, so it was definitely something I considered when joining macys.com. I'm glad that service is a driving force within this company. The diversity of projects at macys.com allows me to choose the ones I'm most passionate about.
What do you like best about your work environment?
I like the people I work with. They are the hardest working, most passionate people I've ever met. My co-workers allow me to enjoy independence in my work, yet they are always available to answer my questions. Above all, they make me strive to do more and to do it better.
What personal interests/hobbies do you have and how do you balance them with your work?
My biggest interest is Taekwondo. Balancing it with work can be challenging. I make it a priority to block out time to go to my classes, especially on the days that I know will be most overwhelming. Taekwondo is a stress release, time that I need to take for myself to keep me focused both at and away from work.
What advice would you give to a new employee joining the company in a similar position to yours? What helped you establish yourself and move ahead with your career goals?
Be assertive. Set your goals and go after them with full force. If you have a question, ask it. If you have an idea, present it to everyone you can and don't fear rejection. Never be afraid of anyone in any position. Always remember that we're all working toward the same goal - promoting the company's success. Telling others my vision and allowing them to help me to achieve my goals has been my greatest tool at macys.com. By finding mentors and taking advantage of all of the open doors around me, I feel that I can best move ahead with my goals.
What do you see in the future for Macy's, Inc. and specifically for macys.com?
Macy's is definitely "America's Department Store." We're aligning our brands to meet everyone's needs. I see macys.com becoming the go-to shopping site for consumers. Finally, I see macys.com becoming the common thread running through all of Macy's divisions. Now and in the future, the macys.com division is the only one that can reach everyone, everywhere.
