Meet the Top Leaders of Macy's, Inc.

Before watching these video segments , you might be interested in knowing more about four of the top leaders of Macy's, Inc., parent company of Macy's and Bloomingdale's. In this video, they are speaking unscripted and in their own words.

Terry Lundgren, Sue Kronick, Janet Grove and Tom Cole are part of one of the most energetic, dynamic and respected executive leadership teams in the retail industry – and on the American business scene. They are visionaries guiding the company to an exciting future of limitless opportunity. Yet, they are pragmatists who fully understand what it takes to serve customer needs – and make a business successful – day-in and day-out.

Terry, as chairman and president/CEO, is a recognized innovator who is leading Macy's, Inc. to a new level of success through enhanced merchandise assortments, simplified pricing, improving the shopping experience and distinctive marketing. In his career at Macy's, Inc., Terry has championed the development and marketing of highly successful private-brand merchandise programs, spearheaded Macy's, Inc.'s efforts to "reinvent" the department store, and focused on developing the national Macy's and Bloomingdale's brands.

Terry joined the company right out of the University of Arizona, and by age 34 was president of a $120 million specialty store division in Los Angeles. He left Federated briefly to be chairman and CEO of Neiman-Marcus, but returned to head the Federated Merchandising Group (now Macy's Merchandising Group). In 1997, at age 44, he was promoted to be the company's highest-ranking merchant. He was CEO at age 50 and chairman at 51.

Sue is Macy's, Inc.'s vice chair responsible for all retail divisions – the five Macy's divisions and Bloomingdale's. Her leadership today is helping Macy's, Inc. to better define its future strategy for providing superior merchandise assortments, value and excitement on the sales floor. She is especially attuned to satisfying the customer who relies on our stores for fashion, convenience and service.

Sue first joined the company as an executive trainee at Bloomingdale's after graduating from Connecticut College. She rose through the ranks to become Bloomingdale's senior vice president and director of stores before being promoted to president of RLG (now Macy's South) in Atlanta and, later, chairman of Burdines (now Macy's Florida) in Miami. She has spent her entire career at Macy's, Inc., and held 15 different assignments in her 30 years with the company before being elected vice chairman in February 2003. They have included assignments in different divisions, differing types of positions, different geographies and different customer segments.

Janet serves in dual roles as a vice chair of the corporation and chairman of the New York-based Macy's Merchandising Group. She's one of the industry's most admired merchants. At MMG, Janet leads a management team responsible for the process of conceptualizing, designing, sourcing, and marketing private label and branded goods across all Macy's stores. She also has overall responsibility for managing the company's core vendor relationships and for identifying customer lifestyle segments for Macy's highly successful private brands, such as I·N·C, Alfani, American Rag and Hotel Collection.

A native of northern California, Janet graduated California State University in Hayward with a degree in marketing. She began her career in 1973 in the executive training program at Macy's West in San Francisco. Over the next 19 years, she held various positions of increasing responsibility at Macy's West, ranging from assistant buyer and sales manager to general merchandise manager. After four years in senior merchant roles at Broadway Stores, Janet became part of the Macy's, Inc. team during a period of rapid growth. In January 1996, she was named senior vice president of center core merchandise at Federated Merchandising Group (now Macy's Merchandising Group), then rose to become its chairman and CEO. She was elected a Federated vice chair in 2003.

Tom is Macy's, Inc.'s senior-most operations executive. As a corporate vice chair, he oversees our company's retail support divisions, including Macy's Systems and Technology, the Macy's Credit and Customer Services and Macy's Logistics and Operations, as well as various Corporate Office functions. One of Tom's greatest contributions is championing the voice of the customer in all corporate decision-making, and for driving reinvent initiatives that have improved the shopping experience at Macy's. He's an executive who excels at managing complex tasks and leading multi-divisional teams across the company.

Tom is a St. Louis native who began his retailing career at Allied Stores Corporation in 1972 after graduating from Kent State University. He joined Federated in 1980 as vice president/controller of I. Magnin, an upscale specialty store division then owned by Federated and based in San Francisco. Later, Tom moved to New York as senior vice president of finance and administration at the Federated Merchandising Group (now Macy's Merchandising Group). He then moved to Cincinnati to become senior vice president of financial services for Federated's Lazarus department store division (now part of Macy's South). Later, he returned to New York as FMG's president and chief operating officer before assuming responsibility for Macy's Systems and Technology, Macy's Credit and Customer Services and Macy's Logistics and Operations.

Terry, Sue, Janet and Tom know Macy's, Inc. as well as anyone. They have benefited from the excitement and fast pace of the company. And they understand what it takes to get ahead.

Terry Lundgren Terry Lundgren, Chairman, President and
Chief Executive Officer

"This is an organization that has not only lived through change, we thrived through change and that gives us reason to think about, 'What's the next idea? What's the next thing we've got to do to make the shopping experience for our customer a better one? To make the experience for our employees a better one?'"
Sue Kronick Sue Kronick, Vice Chair
"We've always been such a result-driven organization and results are a source of pride for everybody in the company... We get so many great new ideas from the company. It doesn't really come from us. The direction is here, but the ideas come from everybody in the company at all levels."
Janet Grove Janet Grove, Vice Chair
"The message that we're getting out, which is one consistent message to keep this unity and feeling of teamwork and spirit alive…give us questions and actually it's very interesting, the dynamics of the group talking to each other and answering each other's questions... I'm always calling on somebody to answer the question that I can't answer."
Tom Cole Tom Cole, Vice Chair
"I think that's (the Reinvent project) changed our culture entirely to where it's this idea of continuous improvement and change, change, change as a good thing, not a bad thing. And that's an important part of Macy's, Inc.'s culture today. It's one of the things that's going to separate us from the rest of the field in the future."
