Community and Events

Contributions
From our earnings, as well as through the Macy's Foundation, the company is able to channel much-needed funding directly to charitable organizations, civic programs, community projects, arts/cultural and educational institutions in dozens of cities. Areas of ongoing special focus for our giving include women's issues, such as breast cancer and domestic violence, and HIV/AIDS.

In addition, the Macy's Foundation matches qualifying employee contributions to educational institutions and arts/cultural institutions, as well as to organizations focused on women's issues and HIV/AIDS.

In total, contributions in fiscal 2004 totaled about $17.6 million.

Among organizations that have recently received support are:

  • Local United Way campaigns in the communities where we operate. In 2004, Federated and its associates gave more than $11.4 million to United Way - including about $3 million in Foundation funds and $8.4 million donated personally by our employees.
  • Colleges, universities and other schools across the country. Total 2004 contributions to educational institutions were about $3 million.
  • Organizations focused on women's issues, such as breast cancer and domestic violence, and HIV/AIDS.
  • $4.5 million over three years to "Go Red for Women," the American Heart Association's national movement to educate women about the dangers of heart disease.
  • More than $4 million contributed to various charities as a result of the company's Thanks for Sharing gift rewards program in 2004.

Special Events
Each year, Macy's and Bloomingdale's develop and host hundreds of special events. It's part of the excitement of the theater of department store retailing. In many cases, these events involve community causes and charity organizations, which gain through increased public exposure and often through funds raised. Among the company's most visible special events are the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, 4th of July fireworks in New York, Lighting of the Great Tree in Atlanta and the Holiday Star in Seattle, and Macy's Passport, an evening of fashion and compassion held in Los Angeles and San Francisco each year to benefit HIV/AIDS organizations.
